I've had this pair of denim cut-offs for maybe four or five years now, and it remains a summer staple in my closet. First of all, it's white, which makes for a clean foundation to build the rest of my outfit on. Here I have paired it with a light gray & white striped tank, and added a lightweight blazer to elevate the look.

The second reason I love these shorts is its frayed hems and shredded details, which give it that "lived in" quality that is quintessential for a casual summer look. I've been able to preserve the careful deconstruction of the shorts by hand washing them or putting them in a garment bag for the washer. Kind of high maintenance for a pair of shorts, but worth it when you have that "perfect" item in your closet.
