Pattern It Up

Mixing bold patterns is tricky. As much as it looks like someone just picked up random pieces and put them on to make a chic multi pattern look there is a method to the madness. You don't want it to look like your eyes were closed when you wear your clothes so here are a few things to think about when choosing what patterns to pair together.

1. Pick one stand out piece and one that acts as an accent piece.
2. Pick prints that share colors OR are similar tones.
3. Use stripes as a neutral
4. Mix different sized patterns
5. Add some texture

Since my skirt had a large, bright pattern I knew I wanted that to be the stand out piece. I kept a smaller pattern on top to act as the accent piece in my outfit. I also wanted to draw out the blue in my skirt so I used that tone in my shirt and accessories. I added in some texture with my leather clutch and velvet platforms. Yes, they are blue velvet and yes, they are kind of amazing.
