natural skincare: seventh generation serum

seventh generation serum review

Seventh Generation, in partnership with Lucky Magazine, recently asked me to review their new Natural Skin-Boosting Serum in Soothing. (I received a free sample of this product from Lucky and Seventh Generation for use in connection with this blog.)

Serum is a fancy word for skin oil. I’ve tried pure Jojoba Oil as a face moisturizer in the past, so I’m familiar with the concept, but I hadn’t tried serum, which mixes a variety of oils and other natural ingredients to correct a specific skin condition. The Seventh Generation Soothing Serum “calms and relieves with oat extract.”

I used it in both ways suggested – blending with my normal moisturizer at night and using it alone under makeup in the morning – and added a bit to my hair and on my lips during my morning regimen.

My Rating: 4/5

Pros:

  • Good bottle design
  • Hypoallergenic, unscented, noncomedogenic
  • All natural ingredients
  • Produced under ethical conditions in Canada
  • Lightweight oil doesn’t feel overly greasy
  • Made hair shiny and soft
  • Added nice boost to regular moisturizer
  • Lightweight lip treatment

Cons:

  • Didn’t wear well throughout day under makeup when used as sole moisturizer
  • Dry skin didn’t feel well hydrated by end of day
  • Oily skin felt too oily by end of day
  • Ingredients may not be ethically sourced

I had a very similar experience with Seventh Generation Serum as I did with Jojoba Oil. While the all-natural ingredients are appealing, my combination skin didn’t feel balanced by the end of the day. I do, however, like this product as a boost to my daily moisturizer and can see it being useful during the cold, drier months. I also like the effect it had on my hair when I added a tiny amount to my hair cream.

I used the serum under my go-to, sensitive skin/organic makeup products and initially liked the result, so it may work better with more even, drier skin:
