Did you catch the Kentucky Derby? How about them ladies and their iconic hats! This week I begin with my derby day look. A little prep, a little boho and a little chic. Are we still wearing check?

I tend to associate 'check' or 'gingham' with fall trends. But I couldn't resist the happy bright color this shirt ensues because it reminds me of summer picnics . I wanted my derby day look to be simple and comfortable, completely different from all the pomp and circumstance that is so traditional of the event. And because I love a fabulous white skirt, although this one is actually more of a soft white, I resurrected it from my closet from last summer's look.

The bright orange is a nice complement to the nude heels. The straw fedora hat, a summer staple and a tad standoffish compared to the traditional flare, completed my Kentucky Derby look. It's fun to combine pieces that are particular to a trend and not look like a hot mess. Chic shoes, preppy top and a touch of boho, how bad can that be!
